That's What She Said © Copyright 2010 by Michael Houlberg She told me, "You loved me last night" "This morning you don't treat me right" She told me, "That money you gave" "Don't make me your personal slave" Things started going south She opened up her mouth And that's what she said She told me, "I'll turn up the heat" "I'm taking this fight to the street" "I don't care what neighbors may say" "I'm packed up and moving away" "Your dream house is a joke" "I'll make sure you go broke" That's what she said She's busted for ramming some guy No license and DUII She called me that Sunday from jail She thinks I should put up her bail I said, "You're on your own" She cussed me on the phone That's what she said

Fifth Night 05:16
Fifth Night © Copyright 2011 by Michael Houlberg The first night I was worried When you didn't come on home. The second night I was crying When you called me on the phone. The third night I was broke-down, I didn't sleep at all. The fourth night I was angry, Pound my fists on the wall. The fifth night I got even Put your stuff out on the street. Went down to the nightclub To see what women I could meet. Ain't nothing like a new woman To make you feel all right, I was feeling so good On the fifth night. The fifth night I took action I restarted my life. Without your problems Without your stresses and strife. Just like a race car Sheds weight to make it light. I was running fast and cool On the fifth night.

Where is it You're Going © Copyright 1969 by Michael Houlberg The road is long and narrow, Cars move by unseeing. A young man, just a stranger Waiting for a ride. Alone, but not lonely, Running, but not fleeing, No one to oppose him, No one on his side. On rides he's had before, Earlier in the day, He hasn't had the luck He knows he should have had. The drivers cannot take him More than just part-way. He really doesn't mind it, He just seems to be sad. He's been there long enough, A car will soon be there. "Where is it you're going?", The driver wants to know. He'll be surprised and look down And say he's not sure where. He'll hear, "That doesn't matter, That's where I want to go."

Her Hands Were Giving Her Away © Copyright 2011 by Michael Houlberg The first time I met her, she was working at the coffee shop. I liked to watch her hands as she poured my steaming cream on top. So when I returned at the end of her working day, She didn't have to say much, her hands were giving her away. We bought a hand rolled burrito at a downtown taco cart. We got some fruits and veggies at the local farmer's mart. Man, the way she fingered those fruits as we put them away, She didn't have to say much, her hands were giving her away. She's got slender fingers with painted nails, Just one touch it never fails, She's talking to me with her hands, She don't need words for me to understand. I had a kink in my neck and it felt like it needed to crack. She took my head in her hands and she laid me on my back. Then she twisted my head in a most peculiar way. She didn't have to say much, her hands were giving her away. She's got slender fingers with painted nails, Just one touch it never fails, She's talking to me with her hands, She don't need words for me to understand.

Feels Like Home © Copyright 2011 by Michael Houlberg As we linger in this silent moment, Night is fading in the dawn's sunshine, Jigsaw puzzle pieces fit together, I feel your heartbeat beating next to mine. Blissful secrets that we whisper sweetly, We know only we know what we share, In this home that we have made between us, There's a comfort that we feel in there. Sometimes I just can't wait, When I start to feel alone, I have to hold you close, Because for all these years, loving you feels like home. I don't need a mountain top home, I don't need a geodesic dome, I don't need an ocean view, All I need is to be loving you. There's a history that we've lived together, There's a future that we're moving toward, We take turns at driving down this highway, We make the journey be it's own reward. Sometimes I just can't wait, When I start to feel alone, I have to hold you close, Because for all these years, loving you feels like home.

Long Long Time Ago © Copyright 2010 by Michael Houlberg I woke up this morning Had the strangest dream You were walking beside me We were seventeen I woke up, when you said it was time for you to go You said never look back, that was a long long time ago I still got your picture Hanging on the wall I look in your face each day Passing through the hall Deep in your eyes there's a message I already know I should never look back, that was a long long time ago I'm driving my car Up suicide hill I remember that night And I always will I reach the top, and I take that curve real slow I should never look back, that was a long long time… You said never look back, that was a long long time… But I can't help looking back, to such a long long time ago.

San Diego Blues © Copyright 2010 by Michael Houlberg I'm going down to San Diego, gonna meet my brown haired girl I'm going down to San Diego, gonna meet my brown haired girl You know the girls in California, are the prettiest in the whole world Well I hope that she still loves me, like she did some time ago Well I hope that she still loves me, like she did some time ago Since my whole world came crashing down, I ain't got no place else to go Well I used to own a nice house, lived in a fine neighborhood Well I used to own a nice house, lived in a fine neighborhood Had a wife, said she'd never leave me, somehow I always knew she would I got laid off from my job, on our anniversary day She ran off, the bills piled up faster than I could pay That's why I'm going to San Diego, try to find that brown haired girl You know the girls in California, are the prettiest in the whole world When my roof started leaking, there were puddles on the floor When my roof started leaking, there were puddles on the floor I didn't have the money to fix it, and the bank wouldn't loan me any more. I'm down here by the freeway, 'cuz that's my new address Got my cardboard sign, "Hungry, Homeless, Anything Helps, God Bless" I want to go to San Diego, hope I find that brown haired girl You know the girls in California, are the prettiest in the whole world

Turn it Around © Copyright 2011 by Michael Houlberg You can turn it around You can turn it around You can turn it around You can turn it around I can't believe the things that you say It doesn't make sense to me I can't believe you'd act this way That's how you want it to be But you can turn it around You can turn it around You can turn it around You can turn it around Come on, turn it around You know what to do, it's up to you You know what to do, it's up to you You know what to do, it's up to you Make it right for me, make it right for you Turn it around You can turn it around Don't turn it upside down You can turn it around Come on, turn it around You think you're so bright, better turn on your light You think you're so bright, better turn on your light You think you're so bright, better turn on your light You got to stop this fight, you got to make it right Turn it around You can turn it around Don't drive it into the ground You can turn it around Come on, turn it around

Why Can't I Fly © Copyright 1969 by Michael Houlberg I'm watching the birds flying over my head and wonder what they're thinking I'm watching the birds flying over my head Why can't I fly I'm hearing the sounds they incessantly make while soaring through the breezes I'm hearing the sounds they incessantly make Why can't I fly The birds that fly so free Seem to be mocking me They call from the sky And dare me to fly But here I'm destined to be I'm asking myself what the world would be like if people could be airborne I'm asking myself what the world would be like Why can't I fly

Blue Suede Cadillac © Copyright 2011 by Michael Houlberg Standing on the corner, starting to get late Heard the purr of a big V8 Classic Cadillac, custom made Body covered in smooth blue suede Long and wide and low to the ground Convertible top was folded down Chrome wire wheels and white leather seats Stereo blasting out Motown beats I'd never seen Man, I'd never seen a car like that I did a double take as I turned back I was looking at a Blue Suede Cadillac Even standing still, waiting for the light Resembling some kind of rocket in flight Looked at the driver, felt our eyes meet She motioned me into the shotgun seat Couldn't resist her smile spread wide Opened the door and stepped inside Mini velvet Elvis with a silver tear Hanging from the middle of the rear view mirror I'd never seen Man, I'd never seen a car like that She took me to the edge of town and then she took me back Cruising in her Blue Suede Cadillac We cruised that boulevard, up and down Everybody's head was turning around Ended too soon, there's no doubt Put something in my hand as I got out Stepped on the curb and spun around That Caddy had vanished without a sound I'd swear it was a dream but for this one thing She gave me the mini velvet portrait of The King I'd never seen Man, I'd never seen a car like that She took me to the edge of town and then she took me back Cruising in her Blue Suede Cadillac
